Tanita body composition monitors use the information from an individual’s analysis to provide a metabolic age rating. Metabolic age is calculated by comparing an individual’s Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) to the BMR average of their chronological age group. BMR decreases with age as muscle mass naturally depletes, so to ensure an individual maintains healthy muscle levels they need to increase their activity levels and adjust their diet accordingly.

If an individual’s metabolic age is higher than their actual age, it is a clear indicator of the need to improve their metabolic rate. Increased exercise builds healthy muscle tissue, which in turn will improve metabolic age.
